Cameo
The duo of pianist Johanna Summer and saxophonist Jakob Manz is a stroke of luck for the young European jazz scene: the pair are two of its stand-out figures, each blessed with supreme virtuosity, indomitable boldness, broad musical horizons, and an unmistakable individual signature. The repertoire and concept of the new album mark a step-change from their debut together ‘The Gallery Concerts I’. Johanna Summer explains: ‘On the first duo album, we played standards and classics, very spontaneously and live. This time, we have tailored the pieces to suit each other.’

Resonanzen
On «Resonanzen» Johanna Summer expands and deepens her very own approach to continuing the narrative of the music of classical composers through improvisation. The album spans a wide arc, starting with Bach via Beethoven, Schubert, Tchaikovsky, Grieg and Ravel to Scriabin, Mompou and Ligeti. She interfuses the two worlds of composition and improvisation with virtuosity.

The Gallery Concerts I
Without a doubt, the two are among the most widely acclaimed discoveries in young German jazz in recent years. On this album Jakob Manz and Johanna Summer enter into a heartfelt, open and dazzling dialogue as a duo. On the basis of their own compositions, standards and newer jazz classics such as Pat Metheny’s “Always and Forever”, Manz and Summer create their own musical universe, sometimes delicate and fragile, sometimes rhythmically gripping, sometimes powerfully melodic.
